South Padre Island, TX

I spent my birthday last week traveling with some of my family as we finalized our drive to South Padre Island to enjoy the beach. The drive was 12+ hours with the worst being in Austin, we avoided that area on the return trip by taking highway 281. I had not been in the South Padre Island area in a very long time, the area has grown quite a bit with a lot of options to stay as well as options for dining. You will not find the white sandy beaches in this area instead you will find brown ones that are flat and great for taking long walks. The waves are constant and at times rather large, be prepared that the waves will have a lot of sand in them due to the intensity and undertow.

Could not have ask for better weather even though one morning we awoke to gale force winds but the sun came out and all was good for a day at the beach. I worked on my tan, watched the sun rise while my brother and I had coffee, took long walks on the beach and ensured that I had plenty of time for my toes to be in the sand...

Wanna Wanna Beach Bar and Grill was recommended by sister and brother in law so we stopped off upon our arrival on the island. It is located on the ocean front and is a very relaxed and kicked back place to grab food and the must have drink, the Turbo. There was live music when we arrived on a Saturday afternoon which was nice. Be prepared this place is popular and will be busy but worth the effort.

I highly recommend Gabriellas Italian Grill and Pizzeria. The food is amazing and comes in huge portions. I had the Italian nachos and have to say they were the best I've ever had. May be a little pricey but if you are looking for really good Italian food this is a winner. No ocean view but the décor is very quaint and the desserts received a thumbs up from us as well.

I am back at my sisters house on Lake Eufaula this week as we plan for our Lockwood gathering on Mother's Day this Sunday. I have loved being home in Oklahoma and having time with family but will wrap up and head to NWA to catch a flight to Florida next week to start new adventures and see more dear friends.
