I wrapped up my time in Maine today as I drove back south to New Hampshire to see my nephew and his family. I fell in love with coastal Maine many years ago when I drove the length of highway 1 to see all the lighthouses and this rugged coastline. Very little of the coastline is visible now due to housing/commercial development and the growth of nature. You can see glimpses on occasion but not like 20 years ago when you could enjoy the view for most of the drive. There are still moments when the coast meets the highway and for a few minutes you experience a breath taking view.
Not sure if it's the magical surrounding of the coast but things seemed highlighted or maybe improved in Maine. Blueberries and maple syrup just seem to taste better when you enjoy them in Maine. You can easily get lost in thought as you drive from one coastal town to the next where all the businesses seem to boast to have the best lobster roll and ice cream options abound.
This rugged and weathered coastline reflects on the people and the surroundings. You could easily take a tour just to see the amazing houses that fit beautifully into the landscape and add an element of awe. Even a cold and rainy day only adds to the character of Maine as in the picture I included from this weeks adventures.
One of my favorite places and if it wasn't for the winters I would have moved here years ago, I think the coast of Maine will always have a place in my heart.
